Though we are a recently established institute, research is an important mission of AIIMS Bhopal towards better healthcare and teaching. At AIIMS Bhopal we pursue research to understand the intricacies and maladies of the human body and its interaction with nature, find a cure to ailments, improve quality of living, and enhance teaching. Research at AIIMS Bhopal is dedicated teamwork led by the faculty of the Institute as Principal Investigators (PI) with the assistance of senior residents, postdoctoral fellows, and undergraduates and technical staff. The research funding is obtained mainly by extramural grants from agencies namely DBT, MPCST, ICMR, DST, and others. The institute aims to provide modest intramural financial support to investigators for initiating research projects that are reviewed by the Research review board (RRB) comprising of faculty of the institute. Depending on the requirements RRB forwards the projects for further review to the Institutional Human Ethics Committee (IHEC), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBSC), and Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC). The registration of IHEC with DCGI, IBSC with DBT and IAEC with CPCSEA is in process research Themes: Our research themes broadly includes Infectious diseases, Maternal health and child nutrition, Molecular cancer research, Viral identification and diagnosis, Neurosciences and Psychiatry, Genetic predisposition to non-communicable diseases, health care policies, toxicology, strategies for surgical interventions and stem cell biology. The themes are not mutually exclusive and the PIs carry interdisciplinary research with national and international collaborations aiming towards novel, low-cost tools for becoming the torchbearer of health care for the state of Madhya Pradesh where malnutrition, maternal mortality, hemophilia are prevalent. Facilities for research: Our research is facilitated by state of art instrumentation including Real-time PCR, flow cytometry, HPLC, Biosafety cabinets, high-speed centrifuges, ELISA, chemiluminescent analyzers, microscopes with varying resolutions manned by trained technical staff. Equipment for high throughput and advanced technologies including genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, mass spectrometry, bioinformatics, and NMR are underwayUndergraduate research: At AIIMS Bhopal, undergraduate students are encouraged to identify a problem in research and address it with help of a mentor in the Institute. The aim of undergraduate research is to develop critical thinking and expand academic knowledge, explore research techniques, inculcate team spirit and time management, identify career interests, establish contacts with faculty, and presenting at research conferences. Undergraduate research has been supported by intramural funding and short term studentships (STS) of ICMR. Twenty-five undergraduates of AIIMS Bhopal have bagged the prestigious STS fellowships since 2012 and have won accolades in platform and poster presentations in various national and international conferences |
Vision
The government of India has launched the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Nirman Bhawan, New Delhi with the objectives of i) correcting regional imbalances in the availability of affordable and reliable tertiary healthcare services; ii) augmenting facilities for quality medical education creating a critical mass of doctors and iii) conducting research in the country relevant to the area.
These institutions will be expected to absorb talent, provide highly trained medical and paramedical manpower for the country and conduct research in national and regional health problems. The institutes will be outside the purview of the Medical Council of India will be allowed to experiment with innovations in medical education and serve as advisory bodies for government health policies.
Administration:
The AIIMS, New Delhi model will be adopted and adapted. Unlike the Postgraduate Institutes which lack the basic departments like Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, General Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology etc, the new AIIMS will have these departments as well as the superspecialty departments like neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, urology, endocrinology etc.
In addition departments of Accident & Emergency, Biostatistics, Medical Engineering, Hospital administration, Genetics, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Telemedicine, Clinical Epidemiology and Medical Education Cell etc are also planned.
This institution should also provide a good opportunity to promote basic scientists and biotechnologists and studies in genomics, proteomics and metabolomics providing opportunity to work in close proximity of rich clinical material.
A lot of effort would go into locating, enticing, appointing and retaining talented faculty as it is the faculty that makes an institution great. Heads of Department would be strengthened by having a say in faculty appointments and promotions and writing annual confidential reports.
Annual self assessment by faculty would be updated as e-portfolio. Each department shall have a 5-year development plan. The entire campus township is likely to have Enterprise Resource Planning with high quality inter and intranet, databases for patients, staff and students, store house management, voice and image transmission and security systems. A purchase department will facilitate purchases in all departments. E-tender policy is will be followed for maximum transparency and efficiency.
